On February 20, 2014, after months of protests lead by the opposition to Viktor Yanukovych, violence escalates in and around Kiev's Independence Square. Snipers open fire on protesters, leaving scores of dead and wounded. In the days that follow, an EU brokered compromise deal falls apart, Yanukovych flees the capital and Ukraine slowly descends to instability.
